We've read several articles now that have implications for how and why we do research (remember the readings from last week on research as inquiry as well as today's article by Kantz). How has reading these articles affected your thinking about how to do research? Thinking of Kantz, especially, do you think her ideas will change your approach to doing research and, especially, writing with sources? If so, how?
Reading these articles hasn't really changed my thinking on why research is done, however in Kants's article, she mentions that when reading texts for research, many students read them like a story, instead of like research. This really stood out to me because I always do the same thing, I read my research like a story. I think in the future, I will mentally organize the information in a general to specific and cause and effect format, rather than just a story.
ReplyDeleteReading the articles we have been assigned in class has made me think about the way I look at research. Like Shelby, when I thought about a research paper it was just a report of the facts I found on a specific subject. After reading Kants, I now see that research can be used in different ways to prove my point.
ReplyDeleteThe article that has affected my thinking is Kantz. By reading it she's made me realize that it's ok to question the so called facts. Both of these readings make me want to become a rhetorical reader, now that im aware of it. Grant-Davies also made me aware of the whole rhetoric situation, and how it can make me a better reader/writer.
ReplyDeleteIt may sound funny, but maybe I will not believe everything that I read. It's like everyone always says, "dont believe everything you hear," it's the same here, question it and propose an argument.
The articles we have read in the class has kind of made me think a slightly different about research. I think a research paper is based on facts and beyond them. In Kantz case i think her ideas can change the approach of research because not only we will not read research like a story but, we will find more interest in it.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading Kantz article there wasn’t a change of my thinking all that much. The thing that changed the way I thought was the way you should not write a paper as informative but writing as an argumentation paper. Now that Kantz explained that not only can I write just facts but also state my own ideas that I question about when I’m doing research about a topic. Kantz has helped the way I will write in the future and be able to express my ideas.
ReplyDeleteI'd never thought about it, but I also feel that I read everything as a narrative. Doing so makes me bore of things that aren't narratives quickly, and it's a bit of a problem. I'd never really been taught otherwise, just to read. I guess this contradicts my very first statement when asked to assess our own reading styles at the beginning of this course, but I guess a change in perception and views was to be encouraged and expected.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with Andrea with what she says about Kantz saying how we read sources like stories. I will have to keep that in mind when researching things because that would make a big difference in my opinion. I also believe that I will start to ask myself about the facts I receive now because of what Kantz explained about how facts can be misleading and theres really no way to find out unless you know the author personally.
ReplyDeleteReading these articles has really changed my view on how to research and how to use sources. Kantz article especially stands out to me. when she talks about 'claims' it opened up to me that in research i should make sure that if I am to use a source I should make sure that it is true and not assume it is. Though it is my choice to challenge the truthfulness of my source.
ReplyDeleteI feel that reading these articles has changed my view a little, especially this last article by Kantz. It has changed my perspective on "facts" and how they are used so commonly in articles. Like Mariela said, making sure that the source is true and not simply assuming it is, is an important thing.
ReplyDeleteBy reading the article about Kantz it has changed my aspects about how I will conduct my research when searching for “facts” and making sure that it is true and that there’s proof and that it’s not just a “claim.” I’d also like to be better at reading texts as “texts” and not as stories.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brenda and believe that Grant-Davies has made me aware of the “rhetoric situations” and how they can make us better readers/writers.
Reading these articles has changed my perspective of how to write or not to write a research paper. Now I know that a research paper is not just a piece of paper that contains lots of facts gathered from different sources (like Shirley’s paper – Appendix A pg 82). We have to question the facts and give our own opinion/arguments, and not always agree to what others have previously said. These authors are basically encouraging the students to express their own ideas/opinions, and to questioning written facts in order to create arguments (not just go with the flow).
ReplyDeleteReading all of these have led me have a different mindset. Kaant's article has affect me the most now because I feel that everything that I had read was like a story.
ReplyDeleteReading these articles have brought different opinions on how I will do a research paper. I especially like how Kantz mentions on page. 71 "you could have thought about why a book entitled A History of France might present a different view of the battle than a book subtitled A history of British Progress". I had never thought about a resource in that way, but it definitely makes sense. There is always 3 sides to a story, one side, the other side and the actual true. Whatever side you are on will always influence how you write your article.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to Kantz claim about how a research paper is much more lucrative when you can identify what your reading as an argument and build on it to make your own claim about your position. I have had to make mental notes about this methond in my research papers in the past, but this article helped me think about what Imm writing in a more "cause-and-effect" manner.
ReplyDeleteI think these readings have definitely changed my ways of looking at the way I research. Now I know to be even more aware of sources not telling whole truths and of course, not to read sources as stories! I'm really bad at that one. But now, I can be an even better student and researcher.
