I'm really excited to see your responses to one of the "Before You Read" options for the Haas & Flower article (see the calendar description for today's homework if you don't remember what I asked you to do). So, post what you came up with here as a comment and then read through your peers' responses as they roll in throughout the day. DUE by 5:00pm, though earlier would be helpful:).
What are you good at, as a reader?
ReplyDeleteI think I am good at that I can read slow and understand what I am reading because theirs people that read fast and don’t understand what they are reading.
What do you think you’re not good at when it comes to reading?
I think I’m not good at when it comes to big words that I don’t understand because then I don’t understand what the text is telling me.
Is there anything you wish you had been taught better or differently?
I wish i had been taught better how to summarize when I read so when I take notes I won’t have to go back to the text and read again.
So the College Reader automatically assumes I have friends to ask about their reading habits.. and I'm definitely not recording myself, so it looks like I'll be participating in the third 'Before you Read' activity. Self-reflection is more my thing anyway.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you good at, as a reader?
Well.. in order to evaluate myself, much less identify what I'd think I'm good at, as a reader, I'd have to have others to compare myself to, to see how I stack up. All throughout middle school to high school, I enjoyed reading. I could read books in less time than it took a majority of my peers, and during class discussions, it seemed that I retained more information. Whenever we were made to passages from the textbook out loud, I saw that some struggled to maintain a flow or rhythm as they progressed through the passage. I myself would occasionally stumble, but it seemed it was not really a major problem for me as it was for some of the other students.
What do you think you’re not good at when it comes to reading?
I've noticed as I've been reading through the College Reader that my mind tends to wander while I'm reading. Every couple of pages, a thought will suddenly pop into my head, and although my eyes are still moving over the words and identifying them, I am not really -reading-. I'll be too caught up in my daydream, and when I realize what's happened, I have to go back and reread whatever lines I had not correctly read the first time around. It happens a lot now, it seems. And it doesn't take much to distract me. I am sad to say that I have not picked up a book in a while, so maybe I'm rusty. In short, I'd say that when it comes to reading, I am bad at maintaining focus in extended readings, particularly if the text is informative rather than entertaining.
Is there anything you wish you had been taught better or differently?
I don't, actually. I feel everything I've been taught up until this point has been very helpful, like using context clues for identifying the meaning of an unfamiliar word, or just my basic reading ability. It's all been more than enough to get me by, and I can't think of any other way to have had a greater teaching. Of course, I wouldn't really know better without having been exposed to greater teachings anyway.
As a reader, I am excellent at understanding what is written and being able to explain it to other readers. Sometimes, I tend to exaggerate and remember things differently than what they actually were. This is not a good skill to have while attempting to read correctly. I wish I could read faster.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you good at, as a reader?
ReplyDeleteAs a reader, I think I’m good at going back and re reading what I didn’t understand. It’s important to know what you are reading for future assignments or tests.
What do you think you’re not good at when it comes to reading?
When it comes to readings there are a few things I’m not good at. I’m not good at understanding what I read the first time or sometimes there are words that I don’t know the meaning to. Also I can’t sit and just read for hours at a time, I read for about half an hour and stop and go back later to start reading again which is one of my bad habits of doing.
Is there anything you wish you had been taught better or differently?
I wish I could’ve been taught how to read faster and understand what I read the first time. It’s such a hassle to go back and read everything again from the beginning. I wish I could’ve been able to be taught how to read rhetorically and write more fluent essays.
What are you good at, as a reader?
ReplyDeleteAs a reader I feel I’m good at reading really fast even though I may not understand everything. As I read I highlight everything I feel that is important, and I also make side notes. Once I’m done reading and making my notes I go back for a second time and re read everything that I made note of.
What do you think you’re not good at when it comes to reading?
When reading I’m not good at taking my time to comprehend what I am reading, I just read through it and read side notes. I’ll do it over and over until I understand what I’m reading.
Is there anything you wish you had been taught better or differently?
There’s not something that I wish I could have been taught better or differently, because throughout all of my school years I’ve been exposed to many different methods of note taking while reading. I’ve just chosen the one that better suits my reading habits.
What am I good at as a reader?
ReplyDelete-As a reader I am good at remembering what it is i read. I am able to understand it better, I re-read to pick up any missing information that I did not grasp the first time I read.
What do you think you're not good at, as a reader?
-What am I bad as a reader? I read entirely too fast and don't grasp everything only what I seem to remember. Which causes me to go back and re-read everything again in a slower pace. So my good reading habits are mixed with my bad reading habits.
Is there anything I wish I would've been taught better?
-I'm not sure, personally I don't believe that both my bad or my good reading habits are so bad for me. I understand what it is i read. Academically, It is hard for me to understand the texts I am required to read. Though that is due to the fact that I can't stay interested if It does not attract my attention which usually happens when reading for my courses. So I guess what I am trying to say is maybe I would've liked to be shown how to read and understand a text when I am not actually interested in reading ti.
I feel that as a reader I understand things differently depending on the subject. When I read a novel I understand thing thoroughly the first time I read them, but when reading a textbook, a book of poems, or more intense literature I may need to read the subject more than once to comprehend what I read. All in all, I think I’m a good reader. I can read something and explain it to others without a problem.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, what am I not good at? Well like I said before, when reading a textbook, poems, or literature I may need to read it more than once. I think it may be that I’m trying to read the writing like if it’s a novel so I miss context clues, or I may not know a word or two.
I think maybe I’d like to have been taught to deeply understand literature better, things like Shakespeare. I can recall when I had literature in high school and I found it rather difficult to understand “Romeo and Juliet.” I love playing “Scrabble” and it helps always to learn new words and meanings. In a way it helps you become a better reader. :)
What are you good at, as a reader?
ReplyDeleteI think I’m good at taking the extra effort to go back and re-read what I did not understand the 1st time. Reading slow and repeated times (if needed) in order to understand what’s being implied.
What do you think you’re not good at when it comes to reading?
Not being able to understand big/complicated words. I kind of lose the point of the text, though most of the time I can figure out what the meaning of the word is by reading the text around it.
Is there anything you wish you had been taught better or differently?
I wish I was taught English in Mexico :) Ok, back in the day that was kind of impossible but just wishful thinking. I wish I was taught to read faster, but at the same time able to understand everything I’m reading without having to go back and re-read.
As a reader I believe that I'm good at understanding or following with the theme or main idea the author tries to portray to the reader.
ReplyDeleteI'm bad at reading into the symbolism of certain literary works or focusing on the little details of articles. I wish I was taught to have a better insight to the details of a story or articles because I often tend to overlook them.
As a reader, I've always been good at reading very quickly. I've always been good at getting through material very quickly. Along with that, I'm also very good at comprehending and recalling the material when needed. As a child, I also was way ahead of the rest of the class. I remember that in 5th grade, I was reading at a 12th grade and college level, while my peers were reading at their grade level.
ReplyDeleteMy weakness in reading is that if I go too fast, I end up skimming and lose some of the information. I also tend to let my mind wander when reading textbooks and see the information but don't collect it and process it.
I never really was taught strategies to read, I just picked them up on my own, however, one of the things that I would like to learn is how to concentrate on my reading more
One thing that I feel that I am good at is picturing the storyline in my head. Understanding big words was always a problem for me so I usually always had to have a dictionary by my side. I wish I was taught to stay focused throughout the story. Sometimes I have to read the same sentence about 3 or 4 times before I finaly get back on track.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you good at, as a reader? I honestly don't think I am a good reader, at all.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think you're not good at when it comes to reading? My biggest problem with reading is that I am not able to understand all that I am reading. I tend to read sentences multiple times just to grasp the concept of it.
Is there anything you wish you had been taught better or differently? I know it was ultimately up to me but I wished my teachers would have told me to slow down when reading. Ever since I can remember, life was always a competition for me. I always wanted to be the first one finished in class no matter what subject it was. I would speed through the texts just to finish. That wasn't a problem back then since the readings were fairly easy. Now that I am reading papers and reports that need a higher level of understanding, I periodically have to reread sentences and even paragraphs because I don't understand the concept due to my fast pace of reading.
As a reader I'm good at reading at a fast pace also I can pinpoint the main ideas that writers want you to get and also being able to visualize the story in my head. Something I'm not good at when it comes to reading is that I have a tendency to read real fast to finish quicker, but I skip certain parts that are important and I don't remember what I've read after awhile. I wish I was taught how to write notes on the side of the reading to remember certain parts of the reading.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised to see how many of you read texts multiple times, though I also noticed how several of you would love it if you could find ways to be, for lack of a better word, "efficient" when you read. How we read depends on the context. When we're reading something we already know a lot about or something which it's not terribly important that we remember details from, we can read more quickly, but when we're reading difficult material or something which isn't part of our normal discourse, it's quite normal for us to have to read slowly, to read multiple times, to consult a dictionary, to talk about the reading with others, etc. I know that's true for me. Reading the articles with you this semester will be more productive for me (and hopefully for you, too) because we'll be talking through them together, working through difficult ideas, making connections together, etc. And we can talk about specific strategies, too. You've seen several ideas just in these posts. Anybody besides Brenda annotate what you read?
ReplyDelete-What are you good at as a reader?
ReplyDeleteIm good at highlighting the first & last sentence and looking up for words i dont know when im reading.
-What do you think you're not good at when it comes to reading?
When it comes to reading i think im not good at actually reading. Most of the time i just read without actually understanding what i read so i have to read it several different times to actually understand what i have read.
-Is there anything you wish you had been taught better or differently?
Yes, i wish i had been taught how to understand what i would read. i know there are different strategies that ive learned now that i wish i knew before.
What are you good at, as a reader?
ReplyDeleteI am good about taking my time to read and going back to re-read information that I didn't fully understand.
What do you think you're not good at when it comes to reading?
Wow this is a big one for me
-I'm not good at understanding what I read promptly it seems to me I go back to re-read something depending on the topic.
-I'm also not good at retaining information for a long period of time
-If asked what was the book about or what I just read I can't always give clear information
-Lastly I tend to wonder of and lose interest. Sometimes I'm reading but it's not processing and my brain is not understanding what I just read
Is there anything you wish you had been taught better or differently?
I wish I had read more as a little kid. Unlike some people I have no interest in reading books for pleasure all of my readings are because I have to. I see my kids now being tested after each reading to see how much they retain and if they understood what the story was about. That to me seems like it will enhance their reading skills.
What am I good at as a reader?
ReplyDeleteI am good at the fact that i can read slowly. I like to take my time reading every single word and when I cant define a word i tend to re read the sentence several times over and over to get different types of definitions for words and what the author was trying to tell us when he wrote the book.
What do you think your not good at when it comes to reading?
When its a topic that i like I can read it but when I get a topic that doesnt seem to intrest me I tend to always start to fall asleep. I find myself reading a whole page and at the end of that page i am still so confussed as to what I just read. I will then have to go back and try to read the page again which is very time consuming.
Is there anything you wish you had been taught better or differently?
I wish i would be abel to define word more easily. Whenever I come across a word I dont know I dont tend to look up the definition. I just tend to guess as to what the word is by all the other surrounding words. Most of the time my definition is correct but I tend to just guess alot.
Another recurring theme I'm seeing here is difficulty finishing a reading (or remembering what you read) when you're not interested. When you start thinking about what kind of research you want to do for your major project, this might be something you could consider developing a research question about:).
ReplyDeleteAs a reader I tend to speed up to the main points; a way to reflect what I am reading about. Once I've identified the main ideas, I'll go back and read the passage one or two times more and relate the smaller details to the larger picture. I do find it difficult to read something that is not interesting to me. However, as a college student, I have to identify ways to overcome this. I usually read the beginning and the end and come to a consensus about what a passage is about. Although, this is a habit I am trying to do away with.
